Capital Facilities Expendable Trust Fund ($325,000)

Shall the Amherst School District raise and appropriate the sum of three hundred twenty five thousand dollars ($325,000) to be added to the Amherst School District Capital Facilities Repair, Maintenance and Improvement Expendable Trust Fund, previously established in March 2003? This sum to come from new taxation. Majority vote required.

BOARD EXPLANATION

Our current buildings continue to need maintenance and repairs. The school district has a long-term plan to fund major capital projects in the Amherst School District and this expendable trust fund is key to fulfilling those plans. This article seeks to raise additional funds through taxation to ensure our ability to further replenish this fund. The Capital Facilities Expendable Trust Fund will be utilized to sustain the long-term capital improvement plan for Amherst Middle School (AMS), maintain contingency funds for unexpected events in all of our buildings across the Amherst School District and address immediate building interior and safety needs at Wilkins Elementary School.

AMHERST WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE COMMENTS

This warrant article allows the district to raise up to $325,000 in new taxation to fund capital improvements identified by the Amherst School Board as necessary to maintain buildings in the district. Specifically, the anticipated use of these funds will be at Wilkins School to remediate critical safety issues. The funds will also be used to maintain and repair the building envelope at Wilkins. These necessary items are critical to maintaining a safe learning environment and proactive remediation is fiscally responsible. The Committee supports this warrant article unanimously.
